What is this ?

What you have found here is a handy, pen shaped text scanner. You can use it to scan and store printed text in the languages English, German, French, Italian and Spanish anytime and anywhere - i.e. off-line, without the need to be connected to a computer. The text is scanned line by line, and the inbuilt optical character recognition technology (OCR) converts the captured image to ASCII text already within the pen.
The accuracy of the character recognition is not as good as that of OCR software packages that come with desktop scanners, though. This results simply from the limited resources of the Pocket Reader: small, slow processor, little memory, runs on batteries...
Via a serial interface you can transfer the text to your favorite computer for further processing: a PC running Windows or Linux, Apple Macintosh, Newton, Psion (Series 3, 5 or 7), HandheldPC (WindowsCE - sorry: no PalmSize devices) or Palm (III or V).

  The Windows software runs under Me, 2000 and XP.
  Not so new any more: Support for WinCE devices with ARM- and SH4-processors!

BUY ONE? Nowadays it is difficult to find a somewhere. Siemens has discontinued the sales and support of the Pocket Reader. You might want to try eBay... Pocket Reader for RISC OS: 4th dimension

IMPORTANT!
If you have installed the Windows software from the original US-CD:

do NOT uninstall the PReader program via the 'Uninstall Pocket Reader' link which you can find in the installation folder (in general this would be 'C:\Program files\SIEMENS\PReader')  - this might result in data loss! Please heed the instructions on the software page!
